Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acupressure?

Acupressure is an ancient form of healing massage and one of the treatment methods used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

It is a form of treatment that applies finger pressure to key healing points on the body, similar to acupuncture, but without needles.

Acupressure has been around for thousands of years and is based on tapping into the body’s 14 meridian lines in order to encourage the flow of qi and ultimately restore balance.

TCM theory states that the constant flow of qi through the meridian lines is essential to maintain health.  When this energy flow is blocked, the body is not able to maintain the balance that is needed to overcome health issues.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is similar to acupressure as it applies focused pressure but specifically to the hands, feet and ears. It is based on the premise that within the hands, feet and ears there are reflex points that correspond to different body organs and systems and when pressure is applied, benefits to these organs and body systems can be achieved.

What should I expect during a session?

Acupressure is performed in an office setting while sitting in a chair or laying on a massage table.  Your clothes remain on during your session.  It is best when you wear comfortable clothing that allows for a full range of motion.  Most people describe it as a comfortable and relaxing treatment, however, you may experience slight pain/discomfort when the proper acupressure point is pressed and some mild soreness for a couple days following.

Will we be talking during the session?

During the initial consultation, we will discuss your concerns and during post sessions I may also check in and ask what you are noticing from time to time.  It is entirely up to you how much you choose to speak during a session.  Some people prefer to not speak at all during the session, others prefer to share at the end of the session.

How soon will I get results?

Most people begin to experience the benefits after the first or second session.

How many sessions will I need?

This all depends on the scope of your issue.  Often, just a few sessions are enough to effectively address an issue, but others may require more time.  Some clients choose to continue weekly sessions as a means of prevention.  We will work together to determine a plan that is right for you and that you are comfortable with.

How long is each acupressure session?

The initial new client consultation is about 45 minutes and includes both discussion and treatment.  All follow up sessions are 30 minutes but, if you prefer, you can book two appointment slots together for a 60-minute session.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?

As a small family-owned business, we appreciate you calling our office as soon as possible, if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.  The sooner you are able to notify us of the change, the more likely we will be able to backfill this appointment time and find you an appointment time that better meets your needs.

How will you keep me safe from COVID and other communicable diseases?

We take every possible precaution to ensure the health and well-being of each client.

Between appointments, surfaces are wipes down with disinfectant and gloves are changed and/or hands are washed.

We are considered a healthcare practice setting by the state of Massachusetts and up until May 11, 2023 were required to follow the COVID-19 mask mandates.  At this time, wearing a mask is completely optional.

If you are feeling unwell, have any symptoms or signs of illness, a cough, etc, we ask that you reschedule your appointment.

Is the cost covered by health insurance?

No, this is not considered “medical treatment” and is not covered by health insurance.  However, many employers have employee wellness benefits that reimburse a portion of the cost of massage therapy.  This tends to be covered under the employer’s wellness program itself or through the employer’s wellness benefit arrangement through the health insurance plan.  If you need to provide proof of acupressure massage treatment to your employer or health insurer, we can provide you a detailed receipt.

What forms of payment do you accept?

In order to keep prices as low as possible for our clients, we only accept cash or check for services.  Payment for service is required at the time of service.
